Canada’s national women’s basketball team faced disappointment as they were eliminated from World Cup contention by Sandy Brondello’s Australian team. Despite this setback, Brondello expressed confidence in Canada’s future, emphasizing the team’s strength and promising young talent.

While Canada won’t be participating in the upcoming World Cup, they secured a spot in the 2028 Olympic qualifier by dominating a pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara. Syla Swords emerged as a standout player, earning the tournament MVP title for her impressive performance.

The Canadian team, consisting of a mix of experienced veterans and promising young players, showcased their commitment and potential during the tournament. Head coach Nell Fortner praised the team’s dedication and highlighted the talent and determination of players like Swords.

Although Canada missed out on the World Cup opportunity, Fortner remains optimistic about the team’s future. With a focus on building chemistry and developing young talent, Canada aims to prepare for the upcoming Olympics and other international competitions.

The growth of Canadian talent in NCAA basketball has been significant, with Fortner noting the increasing number of young women aspiring to play professionally. The presence of the Toronto Tempo in the WNBA is expected to inspire more girls to pursue basketball and contribute to the sport’s growth in Canada.

Looking ahead, Canada is gearing up for the Los Angeles Olympics, with plans for training camps and key tournaments like the FIBA AmeriCup. While success may take time, the foundation is set for Canada to progress and make strides in international women’s basketball competitions.
