“Canadian Stars Shine as National Bank Open Intensifies”

Published on

Following a slow start, the National Bank Open women’s tennis tournament saw a positive turn of events. Leylah Fernandez from Canada secured a spot in the Round of 16. The excitement around Alex Eala, known as “Eala-Mania,” escalated with her recent victory. Prominent players like Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek remained in contention.

Tournament director Karl Hale expressed his satisfaction with the current state of affairs, expecting continuous growth in the tournament and Canadian tennis overall.

The event faced a setback when 2025 champion Victoria Mboko withdrew due to a knee injury. To compensate for the loss, Tennis Canada granted wild-card entries to Bianca Andreescu and six other Canadians, but only Kayla Cross and Katherine Sebov progressed to the second round before being eliminated.

All Canadian players, including doubles star Gabriela Dabrowski, exited the tournament swiftly.

Hale emphasized the significance of having top-ranked singles players participating, attributing their presence to the event’s success. However, he acknowledged the added value of a Canadian player making a deep run in the tournament.

In the upcoming matches, Fernandez, seeded 30th, will face Naomi Osaka after defeating Mirra Andreeva in the third round. Meanwhile, Eala, the breakout sensation, advanced to the Round of 16 and is set to compete against Belinda Bencic.

Swiatek Advances to Quarterfinals

Seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought victory over Marta Kostyuk. She expressed satisfaction with her performance, highlighting the intensity of the match.

Further surprises unfolded as top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka suffered a defeat against Ekaterina Alexandrova, setting up an intriguing quarterfinal clash between Alexandrova and Elina Svitolina.

Despite weather interruptions during the tournament, the competition has continued with exciting matchups. The media presence has been noticeably reduced this year compared to previous editions.

Jodar’s Impressive Performance

Rafael Jodar from Spain delivered a standout performance against Jiri Lehecka, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Jodar’s composed gameplay and strategic breaks led to a convincing victory.

Jodar, although focused on his development rather than rankings, acknowledged the support from fans and the unique experience of playing abroad.

As the competition progresses, exciting matches and unexpected outcomes continue to captivate audiences, with promising players like Jodar making their mark on the tournament.

Stay tuned for more action at the National Bank Open as the competition unfolds through the week.
