“Capturing Nature’s Power: Weather Photographer of the Year”

Published on

The annual contest for the prestigious title of Weather Photographer of the Year is underway, showcasing stunning photographs capturing the forces of nature in action. The Royal Meteorological Society recently unveiled a selection of winning images from the previous year, featuring remarkable scenes such as a circular rainbow, a Texas storm, and a peculiar UFO-like cloud.

Now in its second decade, the competition, which has just opened for submissions, calls on photographers worldwide to share compelling images that depict the strength, beauty, and influence of weather. The event highlights exceptional photography that showcases both dramatic weather occurrences and the evolving impact of climate change. Among last year’s winning entries were striking photographs of wave-like clouds in the Czech Republic, rain-soaked fishermen in Myanmar, and turbulent sea conditions off the UK’s southern coast at Newhaven.

Prof Liz Bentley FRMetS, the Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, emphasized the competition’s role in illustrating how weather shapes our environment, from moments of natural splendor to significant events. She underscored the increasing relevance of these images in fostering public understanding and engagement with the science of weather and climate amidst changing global conditions.

The competition, which is free to enter and welcomes participants of all skill levels, from seasoned professionals to passionate amateurs, will announce this year’s winners in November. One of the captivating images from the previous year, titled “Heading Home” by Maria del Pilar Trigo Bonnin, exemplifies the caliber of photography celebrated in this esteemed competition.
