Frosty, a horse in critical condition, was rescued from a frozen creek in Lehman Creek in January. Local communities and horse enthusiasts rallied to support him, aiding in his recovery and adjustment to his new environment.

Discovered partially submerged in the creek near Cochin, Sask., Frosty was rescued by the village’s mayor, Mark Pattinson, and his friend Ed Scott. Despite initial concerns about his health, Frosty displayed resilience and managed to stand and walk to safety.

Following the passing of his owner, Frosty required urgent medical attention. After several failed attempts to find a caregiver among local horse owners, Leslie-Ann Smith, a compassionate farmer, stepped in to assist. Smith, along with her husband Gerry, took Frosty to Lakeland Veterinary Service for treatment.

Frosty’s recovery process was extensive, involving multiple visits to the veterinarian and various therapeutic interventions. The community’s generous support, both financially and emotionally, facilitated Frosty’s healing journey.

Nearly seven months post-rescue, Frosty has undergone a remarkable transformation. Initially reserved, he now exhibits a friendly and affectionate demeanor, enjoying interactions with humans and other horses. His newfound confidence was showcased during his participation in the Tony Cote Summer Games and horse relay.

While Frosty’s past as a relay horse is acknowledged, Smith has no plans to reintroduce him to racing. Instead, her focus remains on providing him with the care and attention he needs to thrive. Frosty’s inspiring story highlights the strength and resilience shared by humans and animals alike.

Embraced as a local hero, Frosty received a personalized embroidered blanket, symbolizing the care and affection he has found in his new home. Smith attributes Frosty’s survival to the collective efforts of the Cochin, Saulteaux First Nation, and Moosomin First Nation communities, underscoring the importance of unity and determination in overcoming challenges.
