“Chancellor Reeves Announces Tariff Cuts on Food for Savings”

Published on

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has unveiled a plan to remove tariffs on specific food and beverage items to assist consumers in saving money at supermarkets amidst concerns of escalating costs.

The list of items includes products like pasta, juices, tuna, oranges, peaches, and other essential grocery items. These goods will have their tariffs suspended until the conclusion of 2028, encompassing imports worth over £2 billion into the UK.

Typically, a tariff is a tax imposed by the government on imported goods, with the cost often passed on to consumers. The tariffs on these selected products can vary from 2% to 50% of the item’s imported cost, which will now be reduced to 0%.

Though any potential price reductions may not be immediate, it is contingent on businesses passing on the savings to the customers. The initiative concentrates on products with minimal or no domestic production, with additional items slated for announcement following consultations with farmers and retailers.

Following a meeting with major supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury’s, the Chancellor sought solutions to mitigate the impact of rising living costs caused by concerns over potential food inflation due to the Iran conflict.

The disruption in fertilizer supplies from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has affected the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, while increased fuel costs have influenced the prices of goods transportation.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF), representing 12,000 food and drink manufacturers, cautioned that food inflation could surge to 9% by the end of 2026. Additionally, businesses have informed the Bank of England that UK food inflation could reach 7%.

Earlier this month, government officials outlined a worst-case scenario of potential food shortages, particularly in chicken and pork, if the supply of carbon dioxide (CO2) is disrupted. CO2 is crucial in the slaughtering process of certain animals, with ministers emphasizing that shortages have not yet occurred.

Rachel Reeves emphasized, “It is disheartening to witness a conflict impacting family finances here at home. Whether through tariff suspensions to lower food prices, reducing household energy bills by £117, or freezing rail fares and prescription costs, I am committed to supporting those most in need.”

Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds stated, “The public is concerned about how the Middle East conflict could affect their food expenses. That’s why we are suspending specific food tariffs to alleviate financial strain on households while upholding British farmers and securing our food supply.”

“We are collaborating closely with supermarkets, producers, and suppliers to safeguard family finances and ensure continuous production of high-quality British food,” Reynolds added.
