Tragedy struck in France as a soccer enthusiast lost their life while another fights for survival following PSG’s Champions League triumph over Arsenal. Over 400 individuals were apprehended during the ensuing chaos.
The country descended into chaos on Saturday night, with Paris experiencing the most severe unrest. Clashes between police and youths persisted until dawn on Sunday.
An investigation was launched after a 17-year-old male was viciously stabbed near the Champs Élysée. He is currently in critical condition.
A source mentioned, “The victim was attacked by a group of four individuals in a football-related altercation in the early hours of Sunday.”
The victim slipped into a coma and remains in intensive care. The perpetrators are being pursued and are facing attempted murder charges.
Simultaneously, a 23-year-old motorcyclist tragically lost his life after colliding with a concrete block. The incident occurred as fans celebrated PSG’s victory.
A local police spokesperson reported, “The fatal accident occurred on the Paris ring road around 1 am on Sunday.”
French authorities detained around 780 individuals following the violent outbursts in Paris and other locations in France. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez disclosed that 57 police officers sustained injuries, mostly minor, amidst the chaos caused by football supporters.
Nuñez assured at a press briefing that the situation is now largely under control. He stated that the celebrations were mostly peaceful, with disturbances primarily concentrated around Champs Elysees and near the Parc des Princes stadium.
Police had to intervene multiple times to prevent traffic disruptions on the main ring road encircling Paris. Nuñez highlighted incidents in approximately 15 cities outside Paris, resulting in the detention of 780 individuals, with 480 arrests in the Paris region alone.
The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that 277 individuals, including 82 minors, have been placed in police custody for various alleged offenses. These accusations range from assaults on law enforcement to theft and public order violations.
Another serious incident involved a vehicle crashing into a restaurant terrace, causing injuries, one of which was critical. Despite these events, planned victory celebrations at Champ de Mars were set to proceed as scheduled.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host the PSG team at the Elysee presidential palace following their victory in Budapest over Arsenal in the Champions League final.
Fans flooded the streets near the Arc de Triomphe, with some setting off flares and honking car horns. The Champs-Elysees attracted around 20,000 supporters, with police managing the crowds.
Smaller groups incited disturbances in various locations, damaging property and setting fires. Police dispersed individuals attempting to storm a police station in the 8th Arrondissement district.
Last year, after PSG’s first title win, over 200 people were injured in Paris, and more than 500 arrests were made across France.
