Child Injured in Crocodile Attack Undergoes Nerve Graft

Published on

The parents of a young child who reportedly fell into a crocodile enclosure have shared details about his severe injuries and his recent seventh surgical procedure. The three-year-old remains in stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge a month after the incident, where he was attacked by one or more large reptiles.

In a recent update on GoFundMe, the parents disclosed that their son underwent a nerve graft operation on his left arm during the latest surgery. A nerve from his leg was used to replace part of the missing nerve in his left arm, with the hope that it will aid in restoring some function to his left hand in the future. The success of the nerve graft will be assessed through tests in the coming months.

The child spent 4 weeks in the hospital, following a lengthy surgery that addressed various injuries, including tendon and nerve damage, broken bones, and extensive tissue damage in multiple areas of his body. The parents described the surgery as a critical moment, as they faced the possibility of resuscitation and amputation.

The boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rescued by the zoo owners and others after being thrown into the crocodile pit by an individual with reported learning difficulties under the care of chaperones. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released on bail due to his incapacity for interview.

A fundraising campaign initiated to support the child’s recovery and rehabilitation has surpassed £68,000. The parents expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, highlighting their son’s progress in the hospital. They remain hopeful that the recent surgery will be the last before they can return home.

The parents anticipate new challenges in their son’s physical and psychological recovery post-discharge, planning to take temporary time off work to assist him during rehabilitation. They expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support received during this challenging period.

Addenbrooke’s Hospital is under investigation for a potential breach after 40 staff members accessed the child’s medical records. Cambridge University Hospitals is examining whether the access was justified and has self-referred to the Information Commissioner’s Office for further review.
