“Christina Applegate’s MS Misdiagnosis Revelation”

Published on

After half a decade of relentless support for fellow individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), Christina Applegate recently disclosed that medical professionals now doubt her initial diagnosis.

Expressing her feelings on the matter, she described the news as a return to square one during a two-part podcast episode of MeSsy, which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, an MS patient. Applegate took a hiatus from the show to process the revelation.

In an emotional tone, Applegate shared that despite her doctor’s relief at the absence of MS, she did not feel joy but rather a sense of being lost. She highlighted that her condition had not improved but rather worsened, with ongoing issues affecting her legs and overall well-being.

Dr. Mark Freedman from The Ottawa Hospital’s multiple sclerosis research unit likened the disease to a wire losing its protective rubber coating, leading to nerve damage and inflammation that can sever connections permanently.

Misdiagnosis of MS is not uncommon globally, with studies indicating rates as high as 15%. Applegate’s journey began in 2021 when she experienced numbness and pain, undergoing various tests before being diagnosed with MS upon the discovery of brain lesions.

However, a pause in her treatments and advancements in diagnostic tools prompted a reevaluation, leading to the revelation that she did not have MS after all. Applegate expressed her disappointment at not having an alternative diagnosis to explain her ongoing symptoms.

Despite the setback, Applegate reminisced on her advocacy efforts and the bond she shared with Sigler as advocates for MS awareness. She expressed a sense of uncertainty and loss without the MS label that had provided her with a reason for her daily struggles.

Globally, over 3.1 million people live with MS, with Canada having a significant MS prevalence. Misdiagnosis poses risks as unnecessary treatments may expose patients to avoidable complications. Canada maintains a lower misdiagnosis rate due to a higher number of MS specialists and dedicated centers.

In the podcast, Sigler reassured Applegate of the continued importance of her advocacy work, highlighting the potential for a positive outcome despite the misdiagnosis. She offered hope that one day, Applegate might regain her ability to dance, emphasizing the silver lining in the situation.
