“Climate Emergency Debate Postponed Amid Heatwave”

Published on

The discussion regarding a Reform proposition to eliminate a council’s acknowledgment of a climate emergency has been postponed due to extreme heat conditions.

Cllr Austen Moore had submitted a motion to retract the climate emergency declaration of the King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council, which was set for deliberation on Thursday. However, the session has been called off due to the predicted temperatures exceeding 30C, along with red and amber heatwave alerts issued by the Met Office.

In an announcement on Facebook on Tuesday, the King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council stated that the Full Council meeting scheduled for Thursday has been postponed due to the current Red Heat Alert and the forecasted temperatures exceeding 30C for the week. The meeting is rescheduled for Thursday, July 2, at 5pm at the Assembly Room, Town Hall, with the intention of ensuring the well-being and safety of all participants.

The decision to postpone the meeting was made to provide a comfortable environment for councillors, staff, and the public to concentrate fully and make informed decisions, as emphasized by the Mayor.

In 2021, the King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council, under Conservative leadership, had declared a climate emergency, aligning with numerous councils nationwide. Cllr Austen Moore, a self-employed ‘life coach,’ was elected as a Reform councillor for North Lynn in a by-election in June 2025.

In his proposed motion, Cllr Moore highlighted the challenges faced by vulnerable residents due to escalating energy bills, fuel poverty, and financial difficulties linked to policies increasing the cost of basic necessities. He stressed that local environmental strategies should not exacerbate the struggles of those in need or force difficult choices upon individuals.

Presently, the King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council operates without an overall majority. The Reform-led Durham County Council was the first UK local authority to revoke its climate emergency declaration in July 2025.

An amber warning for ‘extreme heat’ issued by the Met Office remains effective throughout the day, with temperatures expected to reach 31C on Thursday. Additionally, a red warning has been issued for many regions in the south, midlands, and Wales, with London anticipating temperatures peaking at 33C.
