“Concerns Rise Over Meningitis B Vaccine Effectiveness”

Published on

Vaccine boosters may have reduced effectiveness against the current strain of meningitis that has claimed the lives of two students in Kent.

Health authorities are contemplating the provision of additional vaccinations to students at the University of Kent and neighboring schools following confirmed cases of meningitis B. However, experts note that existing vaccines for this type of meningitis are not as potent and do not prevent the transmission of the lethal bacteria.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is probing an outbreak that led to the deaths of two individuals and hospitalization of others, promising to disclose the specific strain involved in additional cases once all results are available.

Individuals born prior to 2015 are not shielded against meningitis B unless they have received the vaccine privately. This vaccine was introduced by the NHS for infants in 2015.

Dr. David Elliman, Honorary Associate Professor in Child Health at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, emphasized the success of vaccination programs against meningococcal disease, particularly in reducing illness and fatalities. However, the MenB vaccine’s effectiveness in curbing bacterial transmission is limited compared to other strains.

Meningitis, an infection affecting the brain lining, can be caused by various infections, with multiple vaccines offering protection. The MenACWY vaccine, 6-in-1 vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, and MMRV vaccine are among the NHS vaccines that guard against different meningitis strains.

The focus of the UKHSA investigation has shifted to MenB following reports of 13 meningitis cases, including two fatalities, since March 13. Individuals who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury on specific dates have been advised to seek preventive antibiotic treatment as a precaution.

The MenB vaccine is designed to combat meningococcal group B bacteria, which can lead to severe illnesses such as meningitis and sepsis. Notably, eight out of ten cases last year were attributed to this particular strain.

Conversely, the MenACWY vaccine provides defense against other bacteria types causing meningitis. It is offered to teenagers aged 14 and can be administered as a booster to individuals up to 25 years old who have not received a MenC-containing vaccine.

Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious disease expert at the University of East Anglia, highlighted that not all Group B strains are covered by the MenB vaccine. The decision not to offer a booster MenB vaccine in the UK is based on cost-benefit assessments.

Dr. Elliman suggested that the overall benefits of the MenB vaccine may be lower compared to the MenACWY vaccines. He stressed the need for ongoing evaluation before expanding vaccine distribution and exploring alternative options due to cost considerations.

Meningitis B can initially mimic flu symptoms but escalate rapidly into a serious condition. Recognizable signs include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, vomiting, and a persistent red or purple rash. Prompt medical attention is crucial if meningitis or sepsis is suspected.

The NHS recommends calling emergency services or visiting the nearest A&E department immediately if meningitis or sepsis symptoms are observed.
