“Construction Worker Jailed After Fatal Fall Incident”

Published on

A construction worker has been sentenced to prison for violating health and safety regulations following the tragic death of a young man who fell to his demise while assisting in a garage demolition.

Thomas Neate, aged 19, sustained fatal head injuries when he fell through a gap in the garage roof during the incident that occurred in August 2023. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries weeks later in a hospital, as reported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The HSE investigation revealed that the site lacked necessary safety measures to prevent falls from heights, such as scaffolding or protective systems, despite the evident risk. The responsible individual, Jason Hill, 59, from Ashford, Surrey, admitted guilt to breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in prison at Staines Magistrates’ Court.

Mr. Neate, employed by Hill to assist in site preparation for an extension project, tragically lost his life after falling through an opening in the garage’s roof on Glebe Road, Staines. His family expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing that negligence of safety measures led to an avoidable tragedy.

HSE inspector Jennifer Lester condemned Hill’s disregard for safety precautions, emphasizing the critical importance of implementing basic safety measures to prevent such accidents. She highlighted that working at height poses significant risks in the construction industry, stressing the obligation of all contractors, including those on domestic projects, to ensure worker and public safety.

The inspector reiterated that neglecting safety precautions can have severe consequences, as evidenced by the tragic incident involving Thomas Neate. The HSE extended condolences to the bereaved family and friends during this difficult time.
