Country music legend David Allan Coe dies at 86

Country music icon David Allan Coe passed away at 86, leaving behind a legacy of hit songs like “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile” and “You Never Even Called Me by My Name.” Despite his musical success, Coe faced criticism for incorporating racial stereotypes, misogynistic language, and Confederate flag imagery in his work.

His wife, Kimberly Coe, confirmed his death, describing him as a talented singer, songwriter, and performer who will never be forgotten. Coe, an Ohio native born in 1939, had a troubled past that included stints in correctional facilities for various offenses before moving to Nashville in 1967 to pursue a music career.

Known for his outlaw country music style, Coe released numerous albums and penned songs for artists like Kid Rock. However, his music stirred controversy, especially albums like “Nothing Sacred” and “Underground Album,” which were criticized for their offensive content.

Despite the backlash, Coe maintained that he was not a white supremacist and expressed frustration with the accusations. Survived by his sixth wife, Kimberly, and five children, Coe’s impact on country music will be remembered by fans worldwide.
