“Coyote Sightings Spark Concern in Regina Parks”

Published on

In Regina parks this month, residents have been encountering coyotes, not just at the movie theater. Scott Paton, a regular at Les Sherman Park, came across a coyote in mid-August while walking his dogs. The coyote, not showing aggression but rather curiosity or possibly seeking food, approached within about 10 feet of them. Paton continued his walk, cautioning others in the park. He was informed by a woman at the playground that the coyote had been in the area for weeks, although Paton hasn’t seen it since but has noticed scat in the vicinity.

Despite Paton’s calm demeanor towards the coyote, not everyone in the Cathedral neighborhood shares the same sentiment. Reports of coyote sightings in and around Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park have been flooding Facebook since August. Many posts describe coyotes approaching and trailing people and their pets. Some individuals recounted being chased and encircled by a coyote in Les Sherman Park. Other witnesses noted that the coyote appeared comfortable around humans and was unresponsive to attempts to scare it away with loud noises or gestures.

City Councillor David Froh had a close encounter with a coyote while jogging in Les Sherman Park. He highlighted the need for prompt action when persistent wildlife sightings pose a public safety risk. The City of Regina acknowledged receiving reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals.

Froh emphasized that the removal process is conducted with community and animal safety in mind, involving tranquilization rather than firearm use. He reassured the public that while coyote sightings can be unsettling, they are not uncommon in Regina. Froh urged residents to report sightings of potentially hazardous wild animals to the city for appropriate action.

Coincidentally, the movie “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in various theaters in Regina. Froh advised residents to report real-life coyote sightings and other wildlife concerns to the City of Regina for prompt attention.
