David Beckham, the famous football icon, recently revealed his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Surprisingly, he was seen capturing a selfie next to it just a day after the unveiling.
Beckham, aged 51, shared the selfie on his Instagram stories with the caption “had to check it was still there.” Some have questioned why a former footballer like Beckham was honored with a star traditionally reserved for actors and entertainers like Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, and Madonna, who are mostly American.
Despite the controversy, Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez justified Beckham’s star placement. Recognized under the Sports Entertainment category, she highlighted Beckham’s significant impact on elevating soccer’s popularity in America and his broader influence on global culture.
In addition to his football career across Europe and North America, Beckham’s involvement in entertainment, particularly as the founder of Studio 99 producing documentaries like the Netflix hit “Beckham,” also played a role in his star placement.
During the star acceptance ceremony, attended by his family and friend Tom Cruise, Beckham expressed gratitude, stating, “I’ve always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honor like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me.”
While some critics question the eligibility criteria for the Hollywood Walk of Fame stars and the sponsorship process, Beckham’s star stands as a testament to his lasting impact on sports, entertainment, and global culture.
