“Davina McCall Raises Awareness of Menopause Mental Health Stigma”

Published on

A prominent TV personality, Davina McCall, has highlighted the challenge women face in seeking support for mental health issues related to menopause due to existing stigmas. She has endorsed the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ (RCPsych) call to raise awareness about the connection between menopause and mental well-being.

Menopause, occurring typically between ages 45 and 55 when menstrual periods cease due to decreased hormone levels, can have a prolonged transitional phase known as perimenopause. This phase may bring about symptoms like hot flashes along with potential mental health effects such as anxiety, depression, memory lapses, and irritability.

McCall, an RCPsych honorary fellow, emphasized the significant impact of menopausal mental health struggles on women’s lives and relationships. She stressed the need for open discussions between healthcare providers, workplaces, and social circles to ensure women receive essential support during this vulnerable period.

RCPsych has released a new position statement urging for enhanced healthcare and workplace policies regarding menopause and mental health, with input from women who have faced related challenges. Dr. Lade Smith, RCPsych president, emphasized the need for better understanding and awareness of the mental health implications of menopause across society.

A recent YouGov poll conducted for the college revealed that a substantial portion of UK adults feel uncomfortable discussing menopause with male healthcare professionals. Additionally, many women expressed discomfort in speaking to male superiors or family members about menopause-related issues.

Dr. Smith emphasized the importance of personalized support for women experiencing menopause, encouraging the empowerment of women to make informed decisions regarding their health.
