“Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in Congo History: 2,325 Lives Lost”

Published on

The latest data released by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo revealed that the Ebola outbreak has claimed the lives of 2,325 individuals, making it the deadliest in the country’s history, surpassing the toll of the 2018-2020 outbreak. The country’s public health institute reported a total of 4,945 confirmed cases, with 101 new cases detected within the previous 24 hours.

This outbreak, the 17th in the country, has now become the largest in terms of case numbers, a milestone reached in late July. The total number of deaths has exceeded the previous record of 2,299 deaths recorded during the 2018-2020 outbreak in Congo.

The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, lacks approved vaccines or treatments. The outbreak has gathered pace since its declaration on May 15, facing challenges such as weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and instability, which hinder the identification and response to cases.

The case fatality ratio, representing the proportion of deaths after a confirmed infection, has risen from about 20 percent in early June to 46 percent, indicating that nearly one in every two confirmed cases is fatal. Experts suggest that this trend is not indicative of the virus becoming more lethal but highlights persistent shortcomings in surveillance, case detection, and access to care.

The outbreak has been a cause for concern, being only surpassed in scale by the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. This outbreak resulted in 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Efforts are ongoing to evaluate experimental vaccines and treatments, while global health authorities assess the potential of existing Ebola treatments to provide protection.

The outbreak earlier spread to Uganda, where authorities managed to limit deaths to two and confirmed cases to 20 before declaring an end to the outbreak in that country last month. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals and can lead to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
