The spouse of a US death row convict shared her newfound friendship with the daughter of one of her husband’s victims. Tiana Krasniqi, aged 31, and McKayla Butler, the daughter of Matthew Butler, one of the individuals murdered by James Broadnax, connected earlier this year and formed a bond.
Tiana, a law school graduate, revealed that McKayla, 19, did not support the execution of Broadnax as she believed in his innocence. McKayla had intended to meet Broadnax before his scheduled lethal injection last week.
Broadnax was convicted for the fatal shooting and robbery of music producers Matthew Butler and Stephen Swan in Garland, Dallas, in 2008. His cousin Demarius Cummings, serving a life sentence for the same crime, later claimed responsibility for the murders.
Despite Broadnax initially confessing to the crimes, he later retracted his statement, attributing it to being under the influence of the drug PCP during the interviews. Tiana, residing in Lewisham, South East London, shared her correspondence with McKayla, expressing disappointment that Broadnax’s words were used against him.
Tiana highlighted her admiration for McKayla’s resilience and upcoming wedding on TikTok. She also recounted the emotional turmoil of witnessing her husband’s execution and the lasting impact it has had on her.
Broadnax’s legal team raised concerns about potential juror discrimination based on race during his trial, citing violations of his constitutional rights. The attorneys also contested the use of Broadnax’s rap lyrics as evidence of his character during the court proceedings.
Tiana’s distress over her husband’s death was exacerbated by media reports describing his passing as peaceful, contrary to her firsthand observations of his suffering during the execution. She expressed her frustration with the portrayal of the events surrounding Broadnax’s death.
