Summer is approaching, offering a perfect time to break away for a short vacation. If you’re seeking a destination with exceptional food, breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and a serene ambiance, look no further than St Andrews on the east coast of Scotland. This unique town, home to one of Britain’s oldest universities, offers a blend of modern and traditional experiences that never fail to captivate visitors.

During a weekend trip to the quaint village of Lower Largo in Fife, we took a detour to St Andrews, a mere hour and a half drive from Edinburgh and an hour and three quarters from Glasgow. While St Andrews is renowned for its golfing heritage, there is much more to explore beyond the famous golf courses.

The iconic Old Course, known worldwide, features the historic Swilcan Bridge, a must-see landmark for golf enthusiasts and tourists alike. Dating back over 700 years, the bridge provides an excellent photo opportunity at the 18th hole. Adjacent to the course is the charming Jigger Inn, a cozy pub established in the 1850s, offering a delightful dining experience with a selection of drinks and a welcoming atmosphere.

After a satisfying meal, we delved into the town’s streets, discovering its medieval charm and vibrant culture. St Andrews, with its prestigious university founded in 1413, exudes a sense of antiquity and academic excellence. The town’s multicultural community, bustling with students from around the globe, adds to its allure.

A visit to the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once Scotland’s largest church, provides a glimpse into the town’s rich history. While exploring the waterfront, you can also enjoy the picturesque West Sands Beach, famous for its appearance in “Chariots of Fire.” St Andrews boasts a variety of shops, from well-known brands to unique boutiques like Topping and Company, a family-owned bookstore offering an extensive collection of books, including signed first editions.

No trip to St Andrews is complete without indulging in the renowned fudge doughnuts at Fisher and Donaldson, a beloved bakery established in 1919. These delectable treats, filled with fresh custard and topped with fudge icing, are a local favorite.

Whether you spend a day or a weekend in St Andrews, the town’s charm and beauty are sure to leave a lasting impression. Regardless of the season, St Andrews is a delightful destination, but it truly shines in the summer when the sun graces its streets with warmth and light.
