Drake Faces Allegations of Song Theft

Published on

A recent lawsuit claims that Drake’s hit song, “Janice STFU,” features a stolen hook, an accusation vehemently refuted by his team. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Oct. 16, the lawsuit alleges that the chorus was penned by Aviel (Avi) Hirschfield, a Grammy-winning hip-hop artist who had collaborated with Drake in the past.

According to the lawsuit, Hirschfield drew inspiration for the lyrics and melody while driving a borrowed Maybach to Seattle, listening to “I Follow Rivers” by Lykke Li, a musician previously sampled by Drake. He recorded a demo with his vocals over a track produced by FnZ, a duo associated with Drake, hoping it would reach the rapper.

The lawsuit claims that Hirschfield was surprised to hear Drake perform a nearly identical chorus in “Janice STFU,” alleging that it matched the demo he had shared with producers linked to Drake. However, Drake’s team has adamantly refuted these allegations as baseless.

Comparisons between the two tracks have surfaced online, allowing listeners to judge the similarities for themselves. Despite the controversy, “Janice STFU” debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, marking Drake’s 14th chart-topping hit and surpassing Michael Jackson’s record for the most No. 1 hits by a male solo artist.

In response to the song’s impact, Drake hosted a series of events to apologize to individuals named Janice who felt targeted by the track. Hirschfield, however, did not receive a co-writing credit or a share of the song’s profits.

Drake’s representatives have denied any association with Hirschfield, asserting that the allegations are entirely false and unsubstantiated. Universal Music Group, also implicated in the lawsuit, declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings.
