Parts of British Columbia in Canada are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer. To protect salmon populations from low water levels, water use restrictions have been imposed in Bessette Creek. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were initially issued in July, lifted in early August due to wildfire risk, and then reinstated at the end of August.
Bob Crandall, the treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society on Vancouver Island, highlighted the worsening dryness of the 16 streams connected to Lake Cowichan. The society conducts fry salvage operations to rescue fish from drying rivers and relocate them to other water bodies.
Crandall emphasized the importance of human intervention in mitigating ecosystem challenges caused by human activities. However, scientists caution that such interventions have limitations and may not provide a sustainable long-term solution.
Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall focuses on relocating salmon, trout, and char to areas with more water. The process includes using aerators and nets to transport fish, which has become more challenging with climate change as streams dry up farther upstream.
The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a significant role in fry salvage efforts, utilizing drones to monitor drying streams. Michelle Corfield stressed the cultural and ecological importance of salmon to the Nation, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts spanning river restoration and marine conditions.
In France, similar rescue efforts are facing challenges amid severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure highlighted the unprecedented weather events in France, stressing the inadequacy of existing management strategies in coping with changing conditions. Faure emphasized the urgency of prioritizing ecosystem restoration and efficient water management over short-term interventions like fish relocation, citing the high costs and limitations associated with such efforts.
