The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) mistakenly paid out £850 million in benefits to recipients who had passed away, a significant error. These overpayments occurred when notifications of death were received too late to halt benefit disbursements or arrived when payments were due.

Instances of overpayment can also arise if claimants enter hospitals or care facilities where their care is funded by local authorities or the NHS. Disability benefits like PIP are typically halted or suspended after an individual has been hospitalized for 28 days.

While the specific types of overpaid benefits remain undisclosed, reports indicate a combination of mental health, out-of-work benefits, state pensions, and others. A recent investigation uncovered 2.6 million errors since 2021, with less than half of the £850 million reclaimed to date.

A DWP spokesperson affirmed their commitment to recovering debts deemed feasible and cost-effective. They recommended utilizing the Tell Us Once service to simplify the process of notifying the government about a deceased individual, emphasizing prompt action to ensure benefits reach only entitled recipients.

Following the grant of enhanced bank account verification powers to the DWP, as part of broader anti-fraud measures, financial institutions are now mandated to verify account details for benefit eligibility checks. Factors like savings amounts and extended overseas stays are scrutinized, with limits on savings for Universal Credit claimants and restrictions on Pension Credit recipients’ time abroad.

Crucially, the DWP cannot access bank accounts or view real-time transactions, and benefit decisions are not solely based on bank data. In certain cases, the DWP can directly reclaim owed funds from claimants’ bank accounts without a court order, subject to specific conditions.
