eBay Introduces Authenticity Guarantee for UK Trading Cards

Published on

eBay has introduced a significant update for individuals involved in trading card transactions. The online platform is launching its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK. Under this service, sellers must submit eligible trading cards to eBay’s authentication facility, where Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) will conduct a physical inspection.

Following the assessment, the card will be dispatched to the buyer with an e-tag containing a unique QR code attached to the protective packaging. This code allows buyers to access information about the card and its authentication by scanning it.

Initially, the authentication service will be available for eligible trading cards, such as collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards, priced at £500 and above. By June, this eligibility will extend to all trading cards with a minimum value of £500. The service, which incurs no additional cost for buyers, is already operational for categories like trainers, luxury watches, and handbags.

eBay noted a growing demand for trading cards, especially popular brands like Pokémon and Formula 1. The platform highlighted specific cards, including Charizard ex and Ancient Mew, as highly sought-after items. Moreover, the most searched British athlete on eBay was revealed to be Lando Norris.

The highest-priced trading card sold in the UK was a rare 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare #4 BGS 9 MINT, fetching £16,500. Adam Ireland, Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables at eBay, emphasized the importance of trust in the collectibles sector and highlighted eBay’s commitment to providing a secure and diverse trading experience.

This development follows eBay’s acquisition of second-hand clothing app Depop from Etsy for $1.2 billion (£890 million). The move aims to appeal to a younger demographic and drive long-term growth for the online marketplace. The deal is expected to be finalized in the second quarter, with Depop retaining its brand, platform, and culture.

eBay’s CEO, Jamie Ianonne, expressed enthusiasm about integrating Depop into eBay and leveraging its unique brand and community for the benefit of both buyers and sellers. Peter Semple, Depop’s CEO, shared his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the potential to enhance the marketplace’s growth in the US and beyond.

This collaboration signifies eBay’s strategic focus on enhancing its offerings and expanding its reach in the evolving e-commerce landscape.
