“Edmonton Marathon Defends Route Accuracy Amid Runner Disputes”

Published on

The race director of the Edmonton Marathon has defended the accuracy of their race routes, countering claims from numerous runners online who argued that the distances were too long.

In a statement released on Monday, Tom Keogh emphasized that the half and marathon courses had been officially certified and measured by highly qualified professionals in road race measurement. He highlighted that the course measurer was present on race day to ensure accuracy.

Keogh acknowledged that there were some course adjustments due to ongoing construction activities, which could explain the discrepancies between the official measurements and the GPS readings of individual runners. He clarified that when participants had to maneuver around construction zones or change lanes, the additional lateral distance covered was not factored into the certified course measurement, as per standard road race measurement practices.

Furthermore, Keogh pointed out that both World Athletics and Athletics Canada allow for a variance of up to 1% in road race measurements, underscoring the industry standards accepted by governing bodies.

Chris Winter, the director of domestic programs and safe sport at Athletics Canada, expressed confidence in the Edmonton Marathon’s course measurement and certification process. Winter emphasized that while GPS devices may record distances differently based on the route taken, certified road race courses adhere to established physical measurement methodologies.

Following the race, elite runner Natasha Wodak and other participants raised concerns about the course length. Wodak, who competed in the half marathon national championship, noted discrepancies between her expected time and the actual race result, prompting suspicions of an inaccurately measured course. She stressed the importance of course accuracy for all participants, particularly those striving for personal achievements and records.

Local runner Roy Narten, with extensive marathon experience, echoed Wodak’s sentiments, highlighting the impact of an extended course on runners aiming for specific goals like qualifying for prestigious races such as the Boston Marathon. Narten expressed disappointment over the potential ramifications of an inaccurate course measurement on participants’ race experiences.

Similarly, Brittney White, another participant in the marathon, shared concerns about the course length affecting her Boston Marathon qualification attempt. Despite achieving her time goal, White acknowledged the letdown experienced by many participants due to the perceived discrepancy in the course distance.

Winner of the half marathon, Rory Linkletter, admitted that doubts about the course accuracy had hindered his performance, preventing him from pursuing a course record. Linkletter compared this year’s route with the previous year’s, noting discrepancies in the turnaround point that may have impacted overall race outcomes.

In response to participant feedback, Keogh assured that race organizers valued the input and remained committed to upholding the highest standards in future events.
