An easyJet flight had to conduct an emergency landing due to a passenger inadvertently leaving a phone charging on a powerbank inside their luggage. The incident occurred during the journey from Hurghada, Egypt to Luton, prompting the plane to divert to Rome at 11:30 pm on Tuesday. The unexpected announcement by the captain regarding an unidentified item in the cargo hold surprised the 180 passengers onboard.
Following the emergency landing, the airline’s subsequent flight from Rome to Luton was rescheduled for 2 pm the following day. Passengers were accommodated in hotels or chose to rest at the terminal during the unexpected layover.
One passenger, Paul Casterton, 57, who was accompanied by Laura Bartlett, 61, shared his experience with The Sun, expressing the initial anxiety and eventual relief upon the safe landing. He mentioned the collective sense of relief after the passenger responsible for the incident confessed, averting a potentially alarming situation.
Paul, a construction worker from Nottingham, opted to book an alternative flight with Wizzair for £350 to ensure he made it back for a prior commitment.
In response to the incident, easyJet issued a statement explaining that the diversion to Rome was a precautionary measure upon learning about the power bank in the luggage. Emphasizing safety as their top priority, the airline apologized to all affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.
