England supporters paid a visit to the birthplace of Martin Luther King in Atlanta before the World Cup semi-final to honor the civil rights icon who was assassinated in 1968. Hundreds of Three Lions fans explored King’s childhood home, church, and museum in the neighborhood where he grew up.

John Mills, a 64-year-old Mansfield Town fan from Biddulph, near Stoke-on-Trent, and a consultant for British Ice Skating, along with his friend Brian Jackson, 75, a retired project manager from Mansfield, Notts, shared their experience. They traveled to Atlanta for the group stage matches and engaged in historical sightseeing in each city hosting England games.

Reflecting on their visit to Atlanta, John mentioned their exploration of significant landmarks associated with Martin Luther King, appreciating the preservation of the area. He highlighted their past visits to historical sites in other cities hosting England games, such as Dallas, Boston, and New York.

Brian expressed their love for football and the tradition of exploring different attractions before matches. After the game in Atlanta, they planned to fly to Memphis to visit Graceland, then head to New York in hopes of attending the final match. They expressed gratitude for having guaranteed tickets at a reasonable price through the England supporters club.

John humorously thanked his boss for allowing him to attend the World Cup, emphasizing the memorable experience. Martin Luther King’s legacy as a powerful advocate for civil rights was acknowledged, citing his famous “I have a dream” speech that urged a rejection of racism and bigotry.

The supporters’ journey through historical sites and their passion for football exemplified their unique experience surrounding the World Cup matches.
