Enterprise, N.W.T., has once again come under the oversight of a public administrator following recent disruptions within the community’s council that resulted in insufficient members to carry out official business. The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) announced in a press release on Wednesday the necessity of appointing an administrator for the Hamlet of Enterprise to ensure effective governance, leading to the dismissal of the existing council.

The situation arose in mid-July when two council members resigned, leaving only two individuals on the council, which fell short of the required number to pass motions as per the territory’s Hamlets Act, mandating a majority of councilors to be present for decision-making.

Since January 6, the hamlet has been under supervision, and in May 2025, another administrator was assigned by MACA Minister Vince McKay to address governance, financial, and operational challenges. Previous events in 2024 saw a wave of council resignations shortly after their election, with some members opting out before taking office, citing a lack of confidence in then-mayor Sandra McMaster, who later resigned five months into her term.

The newly appointed administrator, Bobby Borque, along with two deputy administrators, will oversee operations for the next 45 days under the minister’s directive. An election is scheduled to take place within this period, with MACA anticipating the formation of a new council promptly.

Minister McKay emphasized the objective of ensuring that the community’s governance meets the expectations of its residents and facilitating a smooth transition back to local administration through an upcoming election, as stated in the official announcement.
