Households grappling with rising living costs are facing an average annual increase of £214 in essential bills. This surge in costs is part of what is being referred to as “awful April.”

The timing of these hikes is particularly challenging due to the impact of inflation and price increases on many families. However, there are strategies to mitigate these bill increases.

Water bills in England and Wales are set to rise by an average of 5.4% starting in April, resulting in an additional £33 annually for consumers. This adjustment will push the average yearly water bill to £639, according to Water UK.

For those with lower incomes, it is advisable to check if they qualify for social tariffs, which offer discounted rates based on individual circumstances and needs.

Individuals in England and Wales are still billed for water based on the rateable value of their homes from 1990. While new homes have water meters, homeowners can request one for free, although it may not always be feasible.

According to financial adviser Thomas Gibbons from Money Wellness, households can save significant amounts by proactively inquiring about social tariffs, discounts, or bill caps offered by many water companies based on income, household size, or essential usage.

The council tax for a Band D property in England is increasing by £111, or 4.9%, to £2,392 annually. Many individuals may be eligible for discounts based on financial circumstances and household composition.

Gibbons also highlights the importance of checking property bands, as households could potentially reclaim overpaid tax, resulting in savings ranging from £100 to £500 per year or more.

The majority of mobile and broadband providers are increasing bills by £1 to £4 per month, translating to an annual increase of up to £48. Consumers can save money by exploring cheaper deals when out of contract or negotiating with existing providers.

Social tariffs, typically available to individuals on specific benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit, aim to make essential services more affordable. Switching providers could lead to savings of around £200 annually.

Households are encouraged to bundle broadband, TV, and streaming services to unlock monthly savings ranging from £10 to £25.

The TV licence fee is increasing from £174.50 to £180 in April. Discounts are available for individuals who are blind or severely sight-impaired, as well as those in residential care or sheltered accommodation.
