A man expressed relief when he avoided imprisonment despite being caught with 20kg of cannabis at an airport. Paul Barrett, a former soldier, was discovered with cannabis and ketamine in his possession by customs officials at Newcastle Airport. He admitted to having “some weed” due to debts from cocaine and gambling issues.

Barrett, who has a history of drug-related offenses, received a suspended prison sentence at Newcastle Crown Court. He reassured the judge that he would not disappoint before releasing a celebratory exclamation. The drugs found in his possession were valued at £80,000 wholesale.

In a statement, Barrett, citing PTSD from his military service, acknowledged his struggles with cocaine and gambling addictions. His previous convictions include possessing cocaine with intent to supply and being involved in the supply of ketamine and cocaine.

The 38-year-old from Ormskirk, Lancashire, pleaded guilty to charges related to importing cannabis and ketamine. His defense lawyer emphasized Barrett’s understanding of the gravity of his actions and his eagerness to mend his ways for the sake of his children.

Judge Sarah Mallet granted Barrett an 18-month suspended sentence with 100 hours of unpaid work, emphasizing that this was his final opportunity to reform. Barrett, speaking from prison via video-link, expressed gratitude for the chance and his commitment to change for his children. Upon being informed of his release, he exclaimed “get in there” before leaving the video-link room.
