“Experts Call for Urgent Water Safety Education for Children”

Published on

Experts have emphasized the importance of teaching children water safety skills as the tragic death toll of teenagers drowning over the recent Bank Holiday weekend rose to seven. The Outdoor Swimming Society has called for increased education on water dangers, suggesting a flood of social media warnings when warm weather hits. Tragedies included the discovery of Declan Sawyer in Swanholme Lakes near Lincoln and the death of Abbie Carmody-Pepper at Burrow Beach in Dublin.

The need for better water safety education was highlighted further when 13-year-old Reco Puttock was found at Leadbeater Dam in West Yorkshire, and the body of a 12-year-old boy was recovered from the River Ribble in Lancashire. In Rotherham, a teenage boy faced trouble in the water, prompting a search and rescue operation, revealing the importance of teaching children how to swim effectively.

Kate Rew from the Outdoor Swimming Society stressed the urgency of reducing drowning incidents by focusing on teaching children how to swim rather than keeping them away from water. She expressed concern over the rising drowning rates among low-income and ethnically diverse children, emphasizing the need for government intervention to address the issue of children leaving school without proper swimming skills.

Rew highlighted disparities in swimming abilities between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds, calling for increased swimming lessons, better access to pools, and more opportunities for children to build confidence in water. Recognizing the universal attraction to water in hot weather, she stressed the importance of providing practical water education, especially through social media platforms, to enhance water safety awareness and prevent future tragedies.

Alongside the teenage fatalities, a man in his 60s lost his life while trying to assist relatives in difficulty at Tregirls Beach in Cornwall. Rew underlined the significance of sharing detailed water safety information to enable people to enjoy water activities safely, emphasizing the need for education on topics like cold water shock, currents, and basic survival techniques.

The Royal Life Saving Society has urged schools to include open water safety in the curriculum promptly to prevent further tragedies, raising concerns that delaying such education until the next academic year could have serious consequences. While water safety education is set to be part of England’s curriculum from September, the organization stresses the immediate need for nationwide implementation to avoid future incidents.
