Parents of teenagers who tragically lost their lives to knife violence are applauding the removal of thousands of blades from the streets. Pooja Kanda, Caroline Willgoose, and Martin Cosser, who mourn the losses of their sons Ronan, Harvey, and Charlie to fatal stabbings by their peers, expressed gratitude that 14,500 weapons have been deposited in Home Office surrender bins since July 2025, including ninja swords, zombie-style knives, and machetes.
Additionally, 783 knives were voluntarily surrendered to a mobile collection van. This positive development coincides with a significant decrease in the knife homicide rate, which has reached its lowest point in 35 years. Pooja, whose son Ronan fell victim to a fatal attack with a ninja sword in Wolverhampton in 2022, emphasized the importance of each knife surrendered, stating that it represents a potential life saved and averted tragedy for other families.
Caroline, whose son Harvey was fatally stabbed with a hunting knife at his Sheffield school, commended the government’s proactive stance on addressing knife crime. She highlighted the installation of new surrender bins in Yorkshire as a step towards a brighter future, emphasizing the collaborative effort between affected families and the authorities in effecting positive change nationally.
Martin, father of Charlie Cosser, who was fatally stabbed at a party in Warnham, West Sussex, echoed the sentiment of welcoming governmental initiatives aimed at reducing the circulation of knives in communities. He emphasized the life-saving impact of removing knives from the streets and acknowledged the importance of such measures in enhancing public safety.
The presence of charity-managed Word 4 Weapons bins in London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands, along with a mobile surrender van operated by FazAmnesty in various regions, reflects the widespread effort to combat knife violence. Leanne Lucas, a survivor of a stabbing incident and founder of Let’s Be Blunt campaign group, emphasized the significance of facilitating safe and anonymous disposal of knives in preventing harm associated with knife violence.
Furthermore, she advocated for replacing pointed-tip kitchen knives with safer rounded-tip alternatives, aligning with the advocacy of renowned actor and anti-knife crime campaigner Sir Idris Elba. The ongoing governmental commitment to tackling knife crime, with a pledge to halve incidents within a decade, has shown promising results, with an 11% decrease in knife-related incidents since the last general election in July 2024.
The year leading to March 2026 recorded the lowest number of knife-related killings since 1991, a testament to the collective efforts in combatting knife violence. Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones emphasized the importance of every surrendered weapon in enhancing community safety, signaling ongoing initiatives to encourage more individuals to surrender knives and contribute to a safer environment.
