Andy Burnham recently shared that his decision to pursue the position of Prime Minister required some convincing from his wife, Marie-France van Heel. He disclosed that her initial response was hesitant, as she candidly highlighted his past political setbacks.

During an appearance on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, the Makerfield MP also discussed a touching moment involving care staff showing his father, Roy, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, footage of him at Downing Street.

Reflecting on his wife’s reaction to his aspirations, which led to him becoming the leader in place of Keir Starmer, Burnham mentioned the straightforward discussions they had. Despite initial hesitations from his wife, she eventually offered valuable advice after being persuaded to support his ambitions.

Burnham reminisced about his wife’s no-nonsense feedback on his interviews dating back to the early 2000s, where she would bluntly urge him to “Answer the question” after each interview.

Furthermore, Burnham emotionally recounted a heartwarming incident at his father’s care home following his appointment as Prime Minister, where the staff arranged for Roy to watch him on television, hoping he would recognize his son in his new role.
