Family Advocates for “Maya’s Law” to Protect Children

Published on

A family has been advocating for a new legislation aimed at safeguarding children from abuse following the tragic death of their toddler at the hands of the mother’s boyfriend. Michael Daymond inflicted fatal injuries on 2-year-old Maya Chappell, causing damage comparable to car accident trauma in her eyes. Gemma Chappell, Maya’s great aunt, has passionately appealed for this proposed law to protect children from potentially harmful caregivers or parents, emphasizing its critical importance for child welfare.

With over 74,000 signatures, a petition on the government’s website seeks to reach 100,000 to prompt Parliamentary consideration. Additionally, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to bolster the petition and offer assistance to families facing similar circumstances.

Maya’s mother, Dana Carr, had separated from the child’s father, James Chappell, before entering a relationship with Daymond, which swiftly turned tragic. Gemma disclosed that Maya had been living with her father until Carr abruptly removed her from his care and nursery. Concerns arose when visible marks appeared on Maya, but Carr dismissed them, demanding money from James instead of addressing the issues.

Gemma, a police officer, expressed frustration over authorities’ inaction due to legal loopholes, highlighting the necessity for a law like Maya’s Law. This legislation would facilitate sharing crucial information with parents or guardians to safeguard at-risk children from known threats.

Tragically, Maya lost her life after Daymond violently shook her while left in his care by Carr. Daymond, convicted of Maya’s murder, received a life sentence, while Carr was found guilty of child cruelty and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Gemma urges the public to support the petition for legislative change, emphasizing the significance of giving a voice to vulnerable children. She also mentioned James’ enduring grief over Maya’s death and his staunch support for the campaign. The Mirror has reached out to Durham Constabulary for comment.
