The family of a teenager who tragically passed away after entering the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh expedition has honored the memory of the “affectionate young man,” expressing profound sorrow over the immense void his loss has created in their lives.

Umar Dumbuya, a resident of London, lost his life when he entered the river while participating in a DofE venture in Glasbury, Powys, on June 30.

In a heartfelt tribute conveyed through Dyfed-Powys Police, his family stated: “We are shattered by the departure of our son, brother, and grandson. There are no words to convey the depth of our anguish as a family. Umar was a caring soul and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed playing basketball, working out at the gym, and spending time with loved ones and friends. We will forever cherish Umar for his compassion, warmth, and sense of humor. His passing has left an irreparable void in our family, and we kindly request privacy as we navigate through our grief.”

Following reports that the 18-year-old had gone into the water and could not be located, emergency services were alerted to the River Wye in Glasbury. A search operation involving Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and mountain rescue teams was initiated before Umar’s body was recovered.

A spokesperson for the Duke of Edinburgh expressed deep sorrow, confirming the tragic drowning of a young individual during a DofE outing in Powys, Wales. The organization extended condolences to the young person’s family and all participants, pledging unwavering support during this challenging time. DofE is actively collaborating with the college of the deceased and relevant authorities to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident, offering comprehensive assistance and cooperation.
