“US Military Strikes Iran After Vessel Attacks”

Published on

The US military has initiated a series of what it described as “significant” attacks on Iran following the targeting of three commercial vessels in the waters off Oman.

In a statement on Tuesday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces are conducting strikes on Iranian targets in response to the recent incidents involving the deliberate attacks on civilian-manned commercial ships in an international maritime passage.

The strikes were carried out after three tankers were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz from Monday night to Tuesday morning, as reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center. These latest assaults mark the highest number of incidents in a single day since late April, as confirmed by the International Maritime Organization of the United Nations.

Regarding the assaults on the three merchant ships, CENTCOM stated that Iran’s aggressive actions were unjustified, perilous, and a clear breach of the ceasefire agreement.

Following the attacks, the US rescinded the 60-day waiver on sanctions for Iranian oil that was issued by the Treasury Department last month. A US official informed The Associated Press that the license revocation was prompted by Iran’s unacceptable behavior in the strait, emphasizing the need for consequences.

The Iranian mission at the United Nations did not offer an immediate response to the request for comments.

One of the tankers was struck and set ablaze while sailing near the coast of Oman, as reported by UKTMO. Iranian state TV mentioned that the liquefied natural gas tanker was attacked after disregarding warnings, but did not explicitly claim responsibility for the assault.

The other two vessels also came under attack off the coast of Oman or the nearby United Arab Emirates, according to location data provided by UKMTO. Although both ships sustained some damage, no injuries were reported, and they were able to resume their journeys, according to the maritime agency.
