“Fatal Helicopter Crash Claims Eight Lives in Borneo”

Eight individuals tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident that occurred shortly after take-off in a dense jungle area. The aircraft went off the radar during its initial journey over extensive palm oil plantations in Borneo.

The Airbus H130 helicopter, owned by PT Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact five minutes after departing from Melawi district in West Kalimantan province en route to another palm oil plantation in Kubu Raya district. The wreckage and the bodies of the two crew members and six passengers were discovered in the forests in Sekadau district following a search operation conducted by the National Search and Rescue Agency and the Transportation Ministry.

All eight individuals on board were males, with one being a Malaysian citizen, as stated by civil aviation director general Lukman F. Laisa. The deceased were transported to the provincial capital of Pontianak. Confirming the fatalities, Lukman F. Laisa mentioned, “The joint search and rescue team successfully located the crash site, and all passengers and crew members have been confirmed deceased.”

Indonesia, a country with a population of around 270 million, has faced numerous transportation mishaps, including plane crashes and ferry accidents. In a separate incident in January, an airplane crash in a mountainous region on Sulawesi island resulted in the loss of 11 lives.

The wreckage of the turboprop ATR 42-500 that crashed on January 17 was found on the slope of Mount Bulusaraung, along with parts of the aircraft frame and passenger seats. The plane, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, was on a mission from Yogyakarta to Makassar when it disappeared from radar after being directed by air traffic control to adjust its approach alignment. The flight was conducting an airborne maritime surveillance mission with eight crew members and three passengers from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry on board.

The search efforts were hampered by severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy fog, and challenging terrain, which slowed down the search and recovery operations, according to Maj. Gen. Bangun Nawoko, the military commander of South Sulawesi.
