A mother of two is determined to set a new Guinness World Record this weekend, aiming to inspire women from diverse backgrounds to run in attire they feel comfortable in.

Madhusmita Jena, known as Madu, will strive to break the current record for completing the Manchester Marathon in a saree in under three hours and 50 minutes. This would surpass the existing record by five minutes. For Madu, residing in Stockport, Greater Manchester, running holds a deeper significance beyond mere exercise.

Growing up in Saudi Arabia and relocating across the Middle East and Africa before starting her running journey in Dubai in 2008, Madu found solace in running as a new mother seeking personal fulfillment outside of her home. The lack of support groups for mothers in her locality led her to take up running as an outlet for her energy and passion.

Now 46, Madu shared with the Mirror her initial running experience, where she unexpectedly ran 16km with a group preparing for the Dubai marathon, despite doubts about her ability as a new mother. Over time, she progressed rapidly, running her first half-marathon just two months later and a full marathon in under four hours shortly after, while still breastfeeding her son.

With 41 marathons under her belt and notable ultramarathons completed, Madu continues to challenge herself. As she prepares for her upcoming marathon, she aims to break records while advocating for diverse representation in running. Emphasizing the importance of self-care and setting personal goals, she encourages women from various backgrounds to prioritize their well-being and fitness.
