A woman aged 24 lost her life in a hit-and-run incident in North Belfast, as confirmed by the police. The victim, Raven Adams, hailing from Tipperary, was declared deceased at the scene in the York Street vicinity of the city. Furthermore, a 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the collision.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was alerted about the crash involving two pedestrians around 2:40 am. Subsequently, the driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old male, absconded from the scene but was apprehended later by law enforcement in the nearby Cavehill area, according to the PSNI.
Detective Inspector Stewart from the Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit stated, “We were notified around 2:40 am about a single-vehicle collision that involved two pedestrians. The pedestrians were reportedly hit by a vehicle, and the driver, a 22-year-old man, fled the scene and was subsequently arrested by officers in the nearby Cavehill area.”
The detained driver is currently in police custody while investigations into the incident are ongoing. Medical assistance was provided to both pedestrians at the scene by officers and other emergency responders. Regrettably, the female victim was pronounced dead on-site, while the male victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of severe injuries.
Following previous closures in the area, the road has now been fully reopened. The PSNI is appealing to anyone with information regarding the crash or possessing dash-cam footage of the incident to reach out to the authorities through a witness appeal form quoting reference 181 16/07/26 or to dial 101.
Local DUP MLA, Phillip Brett, expressed deep sorrow upon learning about the tragic accident. He extended heartfelt condolences to Raven’s family, friends, and loved ones as they cope with the immense loss. Brett urged any witnesses or individuals with information, including dash-cam or CCTV footage, to cooperate with the investigation by contacting the PSNI at 101, quoting reference 181 of 16 July 2026, emphasizing the significance of even the smallest details in aiding the inquiry.
Acknowledging the somber day for the community, Brett urged respect for the privacy of those affected and requested cooperation to allow the PSNI to conduct a comprehensive investigation. He commended the efforts of the police, ambulance service, and all emergency responders who managed the distressing circumstances at the scene, offering thoughts and prayers for all impacted by the tragic event.
