“Father of Six Survives Attack, Grateful for Life”

Published on

A father of six who was injured in the Golders Green attack has made a remarkable recovery and has been discharged from the hospital. Shloime Rand, 34, welcomed the Mirror into his residence in north London to reflect on the past 48 hours of his life. Seated at his dining table, he shared that doctors informed him that if the wound had been slightly closer to his heart, he might not have survived. Fortunately, he only needed four stitches and will not need to return to the hospital for two weeks. Recounting his experience calmly, he expressed gratitude for being alive, while his wife emphasized the magnitude of the situation.

During the conversation, two of his children, out of his six, attentively listened and comforted their father with hugs. Shloime mentioned that it was his first visit to Golders Green in two months. As a mortgage broker, he is a father to children aged 13, 11, 9, 7, 4, and 2.

Describing the arrival of paramedics, he mentioned the concern in their eyes, which made him anxious. An emergency helicopter even landed nearby. Recalling the ambulance journey, he shared that the medical team promptly conducted an ultrasound upon the doctor’s arrival. Upon reaching the hospital, he was relieved to hear that his condition was not as severe as initially feared. After undergoing an x-ray and CT scan, he received just four stitches on his chest. The doctors reiterated that the injury could have been fatal if it had been a mere two centimeters closer, underscoring the miraculous nature of his survival.

Reflecting on the incident, Shloime emphasized the importance of gratitude for each day and expressed concerns about the prevalence of negativity surrounding anti-Semitism in the country. He declined a visit from Sir Keir Starmer, emphasizing the need for a focus on combating anti-Semitism rather than symbolic gestures.

Rabbi Levi Schapiro, who leads the Jewish Community Council in Stamford Hill, visited Shloime in the hospital post the attack. He shared a poignant incident involving Shloime’s eldest son, who was unaware of his father’s hospitalization, leading to distress among the children.

In a court appearance, Essa Suleiman, 45, faced charges of attempting to kill both Shloime and Norman Shine, 76. The court also heard allegations of another attempted murder prior to the Golders Green incident. Suleiman, who arrived legally in the UK as a child from Somalia in the 1990s, will remain in custody until the next hearing on May 15 at the Old Bailey. He did not enter pleas to the charges against him.
