The father of a young soccer coach who tragically passed away after consuming an MDMA pill due to its cost-effectiveness compared to alcohol has issued a heartfelt cautionary message to other parents.

On New Year’s Eve, Kieran Bassett, hailing from Hastings, was socializing at a friend’s residence, indulging in pre-gathering drinks when he reportedly ingested an ecstasy tablet. Shortly after, his health rapidly deteriorated, leading to his emergency transfer to Conquest Hospital, where he was placed on life support.

Despite the dedicated efforts of medical personnel, Kieran could not be saved and was declared deceased shortly thereafter. His grieving father, Mark Bassett, has bravely shared the harrowing experience of losing his son and his resolve to dissuade youngsters from experimenting with drugs.

Mark Bassett conveyed to MailOnline: “The affordability of a pill in comparison to alcohol seems to be the sole reason why he might have contemplated taking the drug, considering he had a promising life ahead.” He continued, “Law enforcement authorities have indicated a high likelihood of the pill being contaminated or mixed with other substances.”

Describing the distressing scene of his son’s final moments, Mr. Bassett recounted, “One of the most haunting images that will forever stay with me is seeing him lying there, life slipping away, with blood trickling from his nose, and us desperately trying to wipe it away. It was a nightmarish ordeal.”

He passionately urged young individuals to be vigilant about their peers’ well-being and intervene to prevent drug consumption, emphasizing, “The potential risks are not worth taking. You never truly know the contents entering your body. If your friends are contemplating drug use, don’t hesitate to dissuade them and involve their families. You may lose a friend, but you could save a life.”

Highlighting their family’s future aspirations, he added, “Our collective goal is to establish a lasting legacy for Kieran and utilize his narrative as a catalyst to deter other youth from engaging in drug-related activities.”

The 20-year-old, employed as a car insurance renewals advisor, volunteered as the manager for the under-11 team at Hollington Hawks Youth Soccer Club and aspired to acquire coaching certifications. The club expressed, “Kieran transcended his role as a coach, serving as a mentor, role model, and unwavering source of encouragement for our young players.”

Acknowledging Kieran’s significant contributions, the club affirmed, “The dedication, passion, and affection they poured into the U-11s squad will forever be cherished, and their influence will endure in every player they mentored.”
