A man with two children, initially concerned about high cholesterol, received devastating news just before Father’s Day when he discovered he had untreatable cancer. John Thorncroft, aged 58, underwent a routine blood test and later met with his doctor in June 2023, expecting no serious issues. However, he was shocked to learn about his cancer diagnosis.

During the follow-up call discussing his results, John anticipated hearing about high cholesterol but was blindsided by the unexpected news of blood cancer. Initially skeptical, he burst into laughter, only to face the harsh reality of being diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

Despite feeling physically fit and active, John was deeply affected by the news. The hardest part for him was not the diagnosis itself but breaking the news to his children, especially his 17-year-old autistic son, Jack, whom he homeschools.

Blood cancer ranks as the UK’s third most fatal cancer and fifth most prevalent. Over 280,000 individuals in the UK live with blood cancer, with around 41,000 new diagnoses annually.

Following extensive research and consultations with specialists, John sat down with his children to explain the implications of blood cancer and how it might impact their lives. He shared the news with his daughter Shannon, 28, on Father’s Day when she came to visit.

The family, including John’s wife Sally, planned a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords to spend quality time together after the distressing news. Despite the challenges, John remains positive and cherishes each day he gets to spend with his family.

Currently, John is under active monitoring, a phase known as “watch and wait,” where regular check-ups are conducted until treatment becomes necessary. Due to the slow progression of the cancer, treatment is usually delayed until symptoms arise for a more favorable prognosis.

Two years after his diagnosis, John, now retired, faced a decline in mental health and sought counseling to cope with the emotional toll of his illness. Counseling proved instrumental in helping him regain perspective and manage his emotions.

Many individuals with blood cancers like CLL undergo extended periods of active monitoring before requiring treatment. This Father’s Day holds special significance for John’s family as they celebrate his new role as a grandfather.
