“Former Head of Foreign Office to Face MPs Over Mandelson Vetting”

Published on

The former head of the Foreign Office, who was dismissed last week, is set to face questioning from Members of Parliament today regarding the Peter Mandelson vetting controversy. Sir Olly Robbins, whom Keir Starmer removed as the department’s permanent secretary, will have the opportunity to present his perspective to the Foreign Affairs Committee, potentially posing a political challenge for the Prime Minister. MPs are scheduled to interrogate him starting at 9am.

A political turmoil has erupted between No10 and the Foreign Office following the revelation that Peter Mandelson did not pass security vetting, yet no ministers, including Mr. Starmer, were informed. During a two-hour session in the Commons yesterday, the PM expressed his anger towards officials who withheld the crucial information, stating that it was unbelievable that the Foreign Office kept him uninformed.

Nevertheless, Sir Olly is anticipated to offer his account of the events today. A close friend of the civil servant mentioned yesterday that he was deeply saddened by the whole saga.

In an interview on BBC Breakfast, Ed Miliband emphasized that Prime Ministers should not be required to resign every time they make a mistake. He defended Keir Starmer’s decision-making, particularly highlighting his correct judgment on significant matters for the country.

Labour MP Sarah Champion, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, indicated her belief that the PM was unaware of Lord Mandelson’s security vetting failure before last week. She expressed a preference for handling such issues privately rather than through public inquiries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust with civil servants.

The Energy Secretary has voiced support for the PM despite the scandal. Ed Miliband and other officials have indicated that making errors is a natural aspect of being a Prime Minister.

As the committee convenes at 9am, an analysis of the impact of the Peter Mandelson appointment on Keir Starmer is expected. Sir Olly, described as “heartbroken” by a close acquaintance, will provide his account of the Peter Mandelson vetting situation to the Foreign Affairs Committee. This session may carry significant political implications for the Prime Minister.

Tom Fletcher, a UN official, praised Sir Olly Robbins for his dedication to public service and integrity, stating that he has faced challenging times and is deeply affected by recent events.
