“Gen Z Embraces Kimchi and Curry: The Evolution of English Breakfast”

Published on

The traditional English breakfast is undergoing a transformation, with Generation Z individuals opting for trendy kimchi and leftover curry over traditional black pudding. According to a recent EDF survey, only 13% of food enthusiasts under 29 include black pudding in their breakfast, in contrast to a third of older generations. Gen Z is at the forefront of this shift, with 11% adding kimchi, 9% incorporating pesto, and 8% including leftover curry in their morning meal.

The survey highlighted that while the classic English breakfast remains a staple in households, there is a growing trend towards diversity and experimentation in its preparation. A significant 40% of respondents view cooking a Full English breakfast as a Sunday morning tradition, with 60% acknowledging that they spend more time enjoying breakfast on Sundays compared to weekdays.

Interestingly, 61% of respondents admitted to indulging more in their food choices on Sundays, with dishes like the traditional fry-up, pancakes, and pastries being the preferred options. The study of 2,000 adults also revealed that while eggs, bacon, and sausages remain essential components of a classic fry-up, 19% of individuals are now incorporating unexpected extras into their breakfast.

Additional ingredients such as chips, cheese, avocado, and smoked salmon are gaining popularity, with regional variations in preferences observed. Avocado is more favored in London (36%) than in Yorkshire (9%), Scotland (10%), or Northern Ireland (10%). Yorkshire puddings are also making their way onto breakfast plates, with 7% of respondents enjoying them alongside traditional morning fare.

Moreover, the debate over how certain elements of a fry-up should be served continues, with opinions divided on beans and egg preferences. The choice between runny yolks and fully cooked eggs remains contentious, while condiments like ketchup, brown sauce, and even chilli or curry sauce add a spicy twist to the traditional meal.

Preparing a Sunday fry-up is no small feat, with half of the respondents using at least three appliances simultaneously. The toaster, hob, and air fryer are among the most commonly used appliances, indicating the effort put into creating this shared ritual in many households.

For those participating in the Sunday Saver program, which offers free electricity on Sundays, there have already been significant energy savings and credits applied to bills. Customers can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity by shifting their usage away from peak weekday hours, creating an opportunity to power up their weekend rituals without worrying about electricity costs.

TV presenter and farmer Jimmy Doherty expressed his support for the Sunday Saver initiative, highlighting the significance of a hearty Sunday fry-up as the perfect start to a day. With the evolving trends in breakfast choices and the financial benefits of energy-saving programs, the traditional English breakfast continues to adapt to modern preferences and lifestyles.
