Ghislaine Maxwell to Invoke Fifth Amendment in Congressional Hearing

Published on

Convicted teen sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell is set to make an appearance before a US congressional committee in the coming month. Maxwell, a British former socialite and associate of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, is currently serving a 20-year federal prison term for sex trafficking. She is expected to exercise her right to remain silent during her virtual appearance before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on February 9.

James Comer, the committee chairman, confirmed that Maxwell’s legal team has informed them of her intention to invoke the Fifth Amendment, which protects against self-incrimination. Despite mounting pressure from Democrats to pursue contempt of Congress charges against Maxwell, as well as US Attorney General Pam Bondi, due to delays in releasing Epstein-related documents, Comer emphasized the importance of Maxwell’s testimony.

Maxwell’s attorney stated that while she has agreed to comply with the subpoena, she plans to remain silent during the proceedings. The attorney described the upcoming deposition as a mere political spectacle and a waste of taxpayer funds, emphasizing that no new information would be provided.

Although Maxwell could potentially change her stance and disregard the subpoena altogether, the committee remains firm on not granting her immunity in exchange for her testimony. In a recent meeting, Comer also announced plans to advance contempt of Congress resolutions against former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, after their refusal to testify regarding their connections to Epstein.

The Clintons have contested the subpoenas, citing a lack of legislative purpose. They have submitted written statements to the committee and have engaged in negotiations with Comer behind closed doors. A spokesperson for the Clintons highlighted that their involvement with Epstein dates back over two decades and that they have cooperated with the investigation to the best of their abilities.

The Oversight Committee’s inquiry into Epstein’s network and the handling of related records by the government reflects growing criticism of the US Justice Department for failing to disclose all relevant documents. Only a fraction of the required documents has been made public, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

Despite Maxwell’s appeal to the US Supreme Court in October, her case was not heard, solidifying her conviction. Representative Robert Garcia, a ranking Democratic committee member, criticized the Department of Justice for granting what he termed as “special treatment” to Maxwell. He condemned the prolonged delay in Maxwell’s testimony and urged an end to the alleged cover-up.
