The popular TV show Gogglebox has been a consistent presence on screens for many years, but the cast members have faced their fair share of challenges behind the scenes since the program’s inception in 2013. Over the years, Gogglebox has introduced viewers to various well-known families from different regions of the country, such as Giles Wood and Mary Killen in Wiltshire, the Siddiqui family in Derby, the married couple Andrew and Alfie from the Cotswolds, and the mother-daughter-in-law duo Sara and Lara from Yorkshire.
Unfortunately, some cast members have experienced what is known as the “curse of Gogglebox,” which has led to relationship breakdowns, conflicts, and tragic losses. Several couples from the show have parted ways, including Roisin Kelly and Joe Kyle, who were removed from the series in 2023 after being on the show for three years. Roisin recently confirmed their split through social media posts.
In a separate incident in 2024, Stephen Lustig-Webb and his husband Daniel shocked fans by announcing their separation after six years of marriage. Despite this, they still reside together. Stephen shared that their relationship deteriorated toward the end, describing the breakup as distressing and devastating.
Another breakup involved Eve Woerdenweber and Jay Makin, known as ‘Silent Jay,’ who were part of the show with Eve’s parents. In 2015, their relationship ended unexpectedly, with Jay expressing his sadness over the breakup.
Tragedy has also struck the Gogglebox community, with the untimely deaths of former cast members. George Gilbey passed away in 2024 due to a work-related accident, while Mary Cook and Andy Michael, original members of the show, also passed away in recent years.
The program’s OG stars, Leon and June Bernicoff, gained immense popularity since their debut but faced personal challenges, leading to June’s departure from the show after Leon’s death. She later penned a book about their enduring love story before her own passing.
Former stars like Paige Deville and Reverend Kate Bottley have criticized the show for its low pay, citing long hours of filming for minimal compensation. However, Sandra Martin praised the show for providing her with the best income of her life and opportunities for additional paid appearances.
Gogglebox continues to air on Channel 4 every Friday at 9pm, captivating audiences with its unique format and diverse cast of characters.
