“Government of Prince Edward Island to Cover MRI Costs”

Published on

The recent agreement by the government of Prince Edward Island to cover the costs of MRI scans for Islanders at a private clinic in Summerside is anticipated to total up to $720,000. Health P.E.I. confirmed this figure in a statement sent to CBC News. The aim of the agreement, announced earlier this month, is to reduce the necessity for individuals in need of magnetic resonance imaging to travel to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.

Furthermore, Health P.E.I. verified that an agreement providing scans for Islanders at a private MRI clinic in Moncton concluded on March 31, costing the province $3.8 million and offering 2,600 MRI appointments for Island residents. Although there is currently no contract with the MRI facility in Moncton, Health P.E.I. assured that additional capacity will be added as needed to maintain adequate service levels.

MRI scans are utilized by healthcare professionals to detect tumors and diagnose various internal issues in the body, such as in the liver or brain. The initiation of publicly funded scans at the Summerside clinic was expected to commence this month.

Health P.E.I. and the province praised the agreement as a means to reduce scan wait times. According to data on the province’s website, wait times can extend up to 107 days for semi-urgent MRIs and 730 days for non-urgent scans, with urgent scans having a wait time of up to 23 days. The target wait times set by the province are 28 days for semi-urgent, 84 days for non-urgent, and 14 days for urgent scans.

The partnership received criticism from Gord McNeilly, the health critic for the Opposition Liberal Party, who expressed concerns about the trend towards privatization. He suggested that the province should focus on enhancing access within the public healthcare system instead of resorting to private clinics.
