Graham Norton Reveals Heartfelt Friendship with Carrie Fisher

Published on

Graham Norton, the popular chat show host, recently shared a story about his friendship with Hollywood legend Carrie Fisher. Norton, aged 63, first met the iconic Star Wars actress during the filming of Ruby Wax’s BBC Two series called Ruby.

During a unique chat show format where guests engaged in unscripted conversations around a dinner table, Norton revealed that Wax refrained from asking Fisher about her famous role as Princess Leia due to their close relationship. Norton, who was not particularly interested in the sci-fi franchise growing up, was tasked by Wax to inquire about George Lucas’s project during the show.

Recounting the experience on his Wanging On podcast, Norton admitted that he pretended to be a Star Wars fan to Fisher, who then confided in him about the upcoming Star Wars plot, unaware of Norton’s true feelings towards the franchise. Norton humorously mentioned that he had no one to share the information with, as he did not know anyone who cared about Star Wars.

Reflecting on Fisher’s legacy, Norton remarked that Star Wars was both a significant milestone and a challenge for her career. He praised Fisher for her humor and likability, emphasizing the impact of her portrayal of Princess Leia on her life.

In a 2015 interview with Time magazine, Fisher candidly acknowledged that she had embraced her identity as Princess Leia, understanding that the role would forever be a defining part of her persona. Despite initial reservations, Fisher reprised her role as Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens after a 32-year hiatus.

Fisher, who passed away at the age of 60 in 2016, continued to diversify her career by writing semi-autobiographical novels and appearing in various television shows and films post-Star Wars. Recognized for her talent, Fisher received two Emmy award nominations for her role in the sitcom 30 Rock.

Norton also reflected on Fisher’s final appearance on his chat show, revealing that it turned out to be her last interview before her unexpected death. Expressing regret over not knowing it was her final interview, Norton praised Fisher’s resilience and vibrant personality, describing her as a true force of life.
