Greenland Warns US: “You Cannot Control Us”

Published on

As a tense meeting involving Denmark, the US, and Iceland comes to an end, Greenland issues a strong warning to the American leader, asserting, “you cannot control us.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the idea of the US acquiring Greenland is entirely unnecessary following the diplomatic discussions. The Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers, along with US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, convened to discuss the future of the Arctic island.

Rasmussen acknowledged that there was an apparent desire from the US to “conquer” Greenland, but he believes the meeting has influenced a shift in the American stance, as reported by the Express. He emphasized, “We clearly communicated that this is not in Greenland’s best interest.”

Despite the “frank” talks at the White House, a significant disagreement persists over Greenland, according to the Danish foreign minister. Additionally, Denmark announced its decision to enhance its military presence in Greenland with immediate effect, as declared by the country’s defense ministry just before the Washington DC discussions commenced.

Following the meeting with JD Vance and Marco Rubio, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt addressed the media in a joint press conference. Rasmussen reiterated that there is no necessity for the US to acquire the Arctic territory and clarified that there is no imminent threat from Russia.

President Trump previously suggested the possibility of the US annexing Greenland in a matter of “weeks or months.” Thomas Dans, Trump’s Arctic commissioner, emphasized the President’s intent to proceed swiftly on this matter, aiming for expedited progress.

In a separate event, Greenland’s energy minister Naaja Nathanielsen expressed concerns during a press conference in Westminster, describing potential US military actions as undermining the rule of law and necessitating Western allies to reevaluate the global order.
