Tegan McGhee, a 32-year-old woman, was identified today as the stepmother responsible for the tragic death of four-year-old Mason O’Connell Conway while under her care. The court revealed her identity after previously imposing a publication ban.

McGhee received a life sentence from Mr. Justice Paul McDermott for the murder of Mason at a residence in Rathbane, Limerick city on March 16, 2021. The child’s father, John Paul O’Connell, aged 36, was also sentenced to seven years for endangerment, neglect, and obstructing justice related to Mason’s murder.

Mason was discovered with severe injuries at the Rathbane house on March 13, 2021, and succumbed to his injuries three days later. McGhee, who was homeless at the time, was additionally convicted of child cruelty leading up to the murder and received a sentence of four years and six months for those offenses.

During the trial, it was revealed that Mason had endured physical abuse for several weeks before his tragic death. Medical professionals discovered multiple bruises on his body, indicating non-accidental harm. The stepmother admitted to shaking and yelling at Mason before he sustained fatal injuries.

The child’s mother, Elizabeth Conway, expressed her profound grief over the loss of her son, describing him as a loving and caring boy who brought joy to their lives. She recounted memories of his kindness and compassion towards others, emphasizing his loving nature and the devastating impact of his untimely death.

Ms. Conway shared the heartbreaking moment of deciding to disconnect Mason from life support, recounting the pain of witnessing his final moments. She criticized the perpetrators, referring to the tragic incident as an act of “pure evil” committed by someone Mason trusted.
