Former “I’m A Celebrity” contestant Harry Redknapp survived a serious car accident that left him without the ability to smell. Recalling the incident, Redknapp shared how he was traveling to the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy with companions from the sports world when their minibus collided with a car carrying three Italian soldiers.
In a twist of fate, Redknapp’s usual seat in the vehicle was taken by AFC Bournemouth managing director Brian Tiler that day. Tragically, Brian and the three soldiers lost their lives in the crash, while Redknapp sustained severe injuries including a fractured skull, broken nose, and cracked ribs. Despite the ordeal, he eventually recovered, albeit without his sense of smell.
Reflecting on the accident, Redknapp revealed that medical personnel initially thought he was dead upon arrival at the hospital. Fortunately, his injuries, though grave, were not life-threatening despite the initial assessment. Due to his anosmia, or lack of sense of smell, Redknapp humorously mentioned how he handled unpleasant tasks like cleaning the camp toilet during his time on “I’m A Celebrity.”
Additionally, Redknapp shared a separate incident where he accidentally ran over his wife, Sandra. He described the harrowing moment when he realized what had happened and the relief of seeing his wife survive after undergoing surgery for her injuries.
Redknapp’s resilience and humor in the face of adversity have been evident throughout his life, both in surviving the car crash and navigating challenging situations, making him a beloved personality among fans.
