Heineken announces a £44 million investment in its UK pubs. The Dutch brewing giant plans to upgrade 647 pubs within its 2,350-strong Star Pubs estate this year, with 108 pubs set for complete renovation costing £145,000 or more. This initiative is expected to create around 850 jobs.

The refurbishment program will include enhancements to different areas within the pubs for drinking, dining, and sports or entertainment, with a particular focus on sports-themed venues in preparation for the upcoming World Cup.

In addition, Heineken will introduce a new contemporary pub concept tailored to appeal to younger adults, offering a transition from daytime coffee and workspace to evening entertainment with DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music.

Since 2018, Heineken has invested £328 million in British pubs, already commencing work in 52 locations, including reopening eight boarded-up pubs. This investment comes at a crucial time for the struggling pub sector, facing challenges such as rising costs, reduced consumer spending power, and increased National Insurance employer contributions. To alleviate some of these pressures, pubs have received additional business rates support from the Government.

Lawson Mountstevens, Managing Director of Star Pubs, emphasized the importance of reducing the tax burden on pubs to ensure their sustainability. He highlighted the significance of investment in pubs to maintain their social appeal and generate revenue to offset escalating operating costs.

Mountstevens called for comprehensive reform of business rates and a reduction in taxation, including VAT and beer duty, to support the pub industry. He urged the government to collaborate in enhancing the British pub sector, emphasizing the job creation opportunities and positive impact on local communities that such investments can bring.
